Is your ATM ADA compliant ?

Posted in the Federal Register by the Department of Justice on September 15, 2010 the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) has been revised to incorporate the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. The 2010 Standards set new limits effecting access and usability for ATM machines.

The Department of Justice has stated that all ATMs must be in compliance with the new guidelines of the 2010 ADA Act by March 15, 2012.

You Need to Know!

  • ADA compliance is mandatory!
  • All ATM’s must be fully compliant no later than March 15, 2012 (NO EXCEPTIONS)
  • ADA compliance includes voice guidance requirements with regulations impacting numeric PIN pad design, function key visibility, Braille requirements, and physical ATM accessibility.
  • Display: Display must be visible from a point 40" above the center of the ATM machine. Characters displayed on the screen shall be in a sans serif font and displayed at 3/16" or higher. If the ATM offers other options such as coupons or any other service other than ATM transactions, those options also must be available to customers using the speech output.
  • Numeric Key Pad: Numeric keys shall be arranged in a 12 key ascending or descending layout. The number 5 key shall be tactilely distinct from the other keys. Enter Key will show a raised circle (0), Clear key will show a raised left arrow " " and Cancel Key will show a raised "X".

For most ATM machines, this means the top function key aside the display. The lowest functioning element must be no lower than 15" above the ground. For most ATM machines, this will be the cash tray were money is dispensed.
  • Floor Space: The clear floor or ground space for customer’s access to the ATM machine must be 30"x48". The space should allow for either forward or parallel approach to the ATM machine.
