EMV FAQ’s

What is the EMV deadline?
The EMV deadline for ATM compatibility was October 21st, 2016.
If I don't upgrade, am I liable for fraudulent transactions?
Yes. The ATM owner will be held liable if the ATM isn’t capable of reading the new credit cards with the small chips embedded in them. If there are any fraudulent chargebacks through the MasterCard network at an ATM, the ATM owner is liable.
Does my ATM have an EMV card reader?
There are a couple of ways to determine if your ATM is equipped with an EMV card reader. First, you can contact the manufacturer of the ATM. Secondly; contacting the company who sold you the ATM can help you answer this question.
Do I need to buy a new ATM?
You will only need a new ATM if your current ATM cannot be upgraded with an EMV kit that is specifically designed for that model. Usually, older ATMs will need to be completely replaced with a newer model. You can speak with one of CORD’s EMV technical specialist to determine what the best option for you is.
Can I install the new EMV kit myself?
The kit includes the EMV card reader, a mounting bracket, a card reader bezel, some cables and possibly a reset board on the GenMegas and Hantles. The kits do not come with instructions and installation can be difficult. You also have to consider the software version your current ATM has. If it is up-to-date, then most people who are skilled with machines and electronics can handle the upgrade. If the software is too old, you may want to consider hiring a professional ATM technician to do the job. If you are not sure, you can call CORD’s EMV Hotline 877.289.8377 to determine the difficulty of the EMV installation.
What is the liability shift for VISA?
The liability shift date for Visa is October 1, 2017. Most other networks like NYCE, Pulse, Star, etc. will follow VISA’s timeline.
If I purchased a new ATM with an EMV card reader, will the ATM begin accepting EMV chip cards automatically on October 21st?
No. The EMV feature at the ATM must be enabled in order to process EMV transactions to meet the MasterCard EMV mandate and avoid the liability risk. The ATM software may be required to be upgraded depending on the version.
